Bena Resort - History

A federal historic landmark since 1981, the Big Winnie Resort and General Store, was built in 1932.

Constructed in an era when architects used imaginative buildings to attract business, this is truly a gem among few remaining examples of gas stations of its time. This historic treasure gives us a glimpse of the skillmanship, art and design of a bygone era.
The early years of Bena was a booming time for native americans, loggers and trappers, boasting a population in the thousands. Today we are working very hard to preserve this structure for future generations. The local population is much smaller now but our seasonal and visiting guests continue to grow every year, making Lake Winnibigoshish one of the most popular destinations in Minnesota. With its lavish history of the Ojibwe people that created this landmark, it has provided employment and pride in the Bena area for generations, and for all the residents who call this town and reservation home.
